Dai Pai Dong
Once upon a time every street corner in Hong Kong had a dai pai dong which translates literally to “stall with a big license plate”. These outdoor hawker food stalls with no-frills seating areas are common in the suburbs of Hong Kong, particularly SoHo and the Mid-Levels and are famous for cooking up some of the most delicious Chinese food you have ever tasted.
Dai Pai Dong typically specialize in a specific dish, e.g. Chinese BBQ meats including Peking Duck, Char Sui Pork, or Noodles, Dumplings and desserts and are usually passed on for generations with many of them having been in business for 100+ years.
Duck & Roll Founder, Rob Joseph, spent many years doing business in Hong Kong and loved to wander the back streets of SoHo tasting delicious, authentic Cantonese food at these Hawker Stalls.
When Rob and his wife Kate, along with Erika Vikor, moved to Kansas City from Sydney, Australia they missed the authentic tastes of Hong Kong style Cantonese food that was readily available in their hometown. After they successfully opened Banksia in 2018, an opportunity arose to bring the famous tastes of Dai Pai Dong to Kansas City and there was born Duck & Roll.
Duck & Roll combines several hawker stalls into one location serving a variety of Chinese BBQ meats, a wide selection of dumplings and a Wok bar firing up rice and noodle dishes to order.
